Napino and Fallbrook Announce NuVinci® CVP Technology for Innovative Motorized 2-Wheel Vehicle Transmissions

Introduction at the Auto Expo in New Delhi, India (February 8-14, 2018) will highlight how these transmissions can increase fuel economy, reduce emissions, and improve driveability for mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles.

The NuVinci CVP is a revolutionary technology invented by Fallbrook Technologies Inc. (Fallbrook) and licensed to Napino to develop, manufacture, and sell NuVinci Optimized™ transmissions for use in two-wheel vehicles such as mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines.

Compared to the conventional belt CVT found in scooters today, the NuVinci CVP offers a wide range of advantages including: greater transmission efficiency (a NuVinci licensee has measured peak overall transmission efficiency of 94%), greater powertrain system efficiency, greater packaging efficiency, and greater torque capacity. NuVinci is a scalable and affordable technology that uses standard manufacturing processes and traditional materials, OEMs integrating it into their products can expect the cost to be in-line with the market.

About NuVinci® CVP Technology

The NuVinci technology is Transforming Gears into Spheres™ by using a set of rotating spheres between the input and output components of a transmission. Tilting the spheres changes their contact diameters and varies the speed ratio. The efficiency of the NuVinci CVP is a function of three things; the speed ratio, the input torque, and the input speed. This is very much like a conventional step ratio transmission. The highest efficiency is found near 1:1 and tapers as you move to the ratio extremes. The NuVinci CVP works synergistically with electric motors, extending the operating speeds of the motor and at the same time, it can increase the maximum torque at low motor speeds.
