Bajaj Urbanite to make electric vehicles

Progress in some way today is related to a company’s commitment to manufacturing electric vehicles. The promise of electric cars and buses, auto rickshaws and electric bikes floods our news feeds, with the hope one day they will flood our roads. No surprise then that Indian manufacturers are quick to make the promise, either through their own doing or through strategic partnerships and collaborations. Bajaj Urbanite is now working on new and niche products.

The aim is to introduce a revolutionary product in the two wheeler market, a space where Bajaj already does considerable business. Bajaj Urbanite will be charged with making niche two wheeler products as against low-cost, auto rickshaws and electric two-wheelers making its way to India from China. Most electric vehicle inflow is entering the country as parts that are assembled here. Most electric three wheelers ply the streets of Delhi and west Bengal for a remarkably low fare to plug the need for last minute connectivity. Despite plying on main roads without any noticeable safety features, their run continues unabated.

Urbanite will cater to quality. Hero Motocorp has already ventured down this road with Ather Energy at an investment of 205 crores. The Ather S340 electric scooter was launched before the company began collaborating with Hero. Hero Electric has been working in the EV space for a few years already.

Last year, Made in India Tork T6X electric motorcycle was launched at a price of Rs 1.25 lakh by Tork Motorcycles working in this space. TVS secures has secured a patent for a hybrid two wheeler, and is working on an electric scooter. Emflux Motors will debut its made-in-India electric sports bike at the 2018 Auto Expo. The menza electric bike will be shown at Auto Expo too.

Urbanite will focus on premium two-wheelers, and three-wheelers. Bajaj has kept away from making scooters for a while now. The niche Urbanite business could change that.
