A good joke can communicate everything and Ellen DeGeneres knows it. The celebrity talk show host has opened up about the “devastating” time she went through when allegations started surfacing about the “toxic work culture” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. DeGeneres — who was the name and face behind The Ellen DeGeneres Show— was heavily criticised for perpetuating a “toxic work culture” on her show, which led to massive drop in ratings for her once popular show. The show was ultimately shut down in 2022.

The globally popular show concluded after running for 19 seasons, as allegations started picking steam in 2020 about its unhealthy work environment. Several ex-employees and a current employee had alleged that they were treated unfairly at The Ellen DeGeneres Show. While one employee said she had faced racial discrimination, a few complained of sexual misconduct.

During her latest standup routine in California, Ellen DeGeneres joked about getting “kicked out of show business” for being “mean,” reported People. DeGeneres said she had become the “most hated person in America” as the allegations started mounting, leading to three producers exiting the show, which eventually wrapped up in 2022.

“The hate went on for a long time and I would try to avoid looking at the news. The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline… I’m making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating. It took a long time for me to want to do anything again,” she was quoted as saying.

Ellen also spoke about how she was “in a funk” and it started to affect wife Portia de Rossi. “She was watching it happen to me… she went through it with me,” she said about Portia. The 66-year-old comedian said she “hated” the way the show–that she “loved so much”–ended, leaving her viewers with a damaging negative perception of her.
