2018 Auto Expo promises over 100 product unveilings and 24 launches

Auto-buffs have a huge reason to rejoice as the 14th edition of Auto Expo, scheduled to be held from 9-14 February, 2018 will be hosting over 100 product unveilings along with 24 product launches. Even though the biennial event will not feature many big companies like Ford & Volkswagen group, the event still has a lot to offer to the auto-enthusiasts.

As per SIAM, the launch of 24 products in the 2018 event is a huge jump from the previous edition’s count. SIAM’s organising committee believes that the Indian auto industry is going through multiple disruptions, for example the shift from BS IV to BS VI vehicles, plan for EVs, etc. which has forced auto cos to bring out innovative products and not just mere upgrades to the conventional vehicles.

Though, some of the participants who are missing out this year, have stated the reason for missing out, is the high cost of participation. As per the organising committee, the cost of participation in the Auto Expo which currently ranges between INR 30 – INR 50 crores hasn’t seen an upward movement in the recent past.

Mr. Sugato Sen, Deputy Director General, SIAM, said “This edition of the Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2018 is one of the biggest motor shows of this region and we have moved away from just the static displays of automobiles to a more dynamic showcase of total mobility solutions. There will be multiple zones for different activities keeping in tune with the theme of the expo – ‘co-create, co-exist and celebrate’, and will be more focused towards new technologies and innovation in the auto industry.”

Keeping this in mind, Special zones are being introduced to provide the visitors with a holistic experience of the industry, namely:

Motorsports – Motorsports club of India will display rally vehicles and various memorabilia
Auto Gaming Arena – E-gaming Society to organise first All-India Auto Gaming Championship
#Future Decoded (VRZone) – Virtual reality experience of driving connected and autonomous Electric Vehicles on various roads to introduce the concept of future mobility
70 Years of Indian Automobility – A special zone on 70 years of the automobile industry in India, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of our independence
Exotica – This zone will see display of heritage cars and super cars and will be curated by their associations
Anti-counterfeiting – Various engaging activities of SIAM to promote genuine spare parts
Application Vehicles – Display of various application vehicles like Milk Van, Army Trucks, School Bus, Postal Vehicle, Fire Tender, Refrigerated Vans, etc.

The Auto Expo looks highly promising with many established OEMs planning for launch or premieres of their vehicles, along with Indian debuts of some international brands like Cleveland Cyclewerks. For example, Tata Motors has recently released a teaser about 3 new products which are scheduled to be launched next month at the expo. Another home-grown auto manufacturer, Mahindra is also planning to showcase its Indianized version of the Ssangyong Rexton, along with a possible face-lift of the XUV500. Hyundai too has planned for the unveiling of its updated premium hot-hatch, the i20 among other launches. There will be a lot more surprises. Stay tuned.
